Words Matter Campaign

Changing how we think and talk about aging

A sheet of paper on a clipboard displays the word "Elderly," with a bold blue "X" crossing out the "ly" at the end. A person in the foreground holds a paintbrush.

The Opportunity

Ageism often starts with the language we use, reinforcing stereotypes and limiting our understanding of what it means to grow older. By making subtle shifts in our language, we can challenge these biases and help create a more inclusive and respectful society for people of all ages. This presents an opportunity to raise awareness and change how we talk about aging.

The Solution

As part of the Duluth Age-Friendly initiative, the Words Matter Campaign provides helpful ways to rethink and transform how we talk about aging. From removing the “ly” in “elderly” to reconsidering how we refer to where we live at every age and stage of our lives, each video highlights how small language shifts can impact how we talk and perceive the aging process.

HOME IS NOT A FACILITY VIDEO

A person holds a sign that says "OLDER" in large letters, with the words "ELDER," "SENIOR MOMENT," "AGED," and "FACULTY" written around it and crossed out.
