Safer Driver Medical Assessment and Driver Training School

The Safer Driver training program offers testing for individuals ability to operate a vehicle in relation to health condition. They also offer training for drivers that are in need of extra help.

Behind the Wheel Skills Assessments (BTW)

  • Clinical Driving Skills Assessment must be completed
  • The client needs to be referred for the BTW by an occupational therapist trained in the Driving Risk Calculator
  • Providers of this assessment include, St. Luke’s Duluth, Lake View Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital, and Hibbing Family Clinic
  • Assessment takes 1 hour driving a 2015 CRV training vehicle with a instructor that has a brake on passenger side to control if needed
  • No personal vehicles can be used according law
  • Only client and instructor are allowed in vehicle
  • The assessment starts in low traffic zone (ex: parking lot) then progresses to more complexed environments if client can tolerate it
  • Assessment will go to freeway if it is a regular route of the client
  • Goal of assessment it for safety and success, instructor will provide directions and will not try or trick the client into making a error

Training Lessons

  • After assessment behind the wheel is completed further training might be suggested
  • Further training helps develop skills in the use of adaptive driving equipment, refresh skills or develop new skills
  • Before lessons the client must complete the Clinical Driving Skills Assessment and Behind the Wheel Assessment

Travel Charge Outside of Local Area

  • The Assessment and lessons are provided in Duluth, Cloquet, and Two Harbors
  • If service is requested outside of this area extra service fee for mileage will be added and agreed upon by the client and Safer Driver

Payment

  • All services must be paid at the time of assessment or training by cash or check, no credit or debit payments
  • Not covered by insurance
  • Call for price

Release of Information

  • The results of assessment and lessons are released to the referring medical professional
  • Client will sign a release form prior to service

Covid-19 Precaution’s

  • Client will be provided with gloves and facemasks as needed
  • MN department of Public Safety Driver Education Program & MN Department of Health rules will be enforced
